Capturing the Heart of Central Vietnam: A Photographic Journey

During my photography workshop with Jord Hammond in August 2023, Day 7 marked our journey to Central Vietnam, specifically to the charming coastal town of Quy Nhon. This region, with its serene fishing villages and vibrant beach markets, provided a wealth of photographic opportunities and an immersive cultural experience.

A Morning at the Fishing Village

Our day began early, before the sun had fully risen. The fishing village was already bustling with activity. Traditional Vietnamese boats and banana boats, used to transfer fish from the main boats to the beach, filled the horizon. The scene was picturesque, with the soft hues of dawn casting a golden glow over the waters.

One of the most captivating aspects of this fishing village was watching the local people help transfer the fish from the banana boats to the shore. Here, the fish were weighed and prepared for distribution to various local markets. This traditional practice has been carried out for generations and is a testament to the enduring spirit of the local fishing communities.

 Beach Market Bustle

The beach market was a sensory overload in the best possible way. Vendors, primarily women, showcased an array of fresh seafood. The energy was palpable as buyers and sellers engaged in animated haggling.

The market offered a rich tapestry of photographic subjects, from the vivid colors of the fish to the expressive faces of the market-goers. I found myself immersed in the lively atmosphere, captivated by the sounds of laughter and the sharp, salty scent of the sea. The vendors' warm smiles and welcoming gestures made me feel like a part of their community, even if just for a moment.

Anchovy Drying and Net Mending

Moving away from the market, we came across rows of anchovies laid out to dry under the sun. This traditional method of preserving fish is both efficient and sustainable. The sight of silver fish glistening in the sunlight, set against the azure backdrop of the sea, was mesmerizing.

Nearby, several villagers were busy mending fishing nets. This labor-intensive task is crucial for maintaining the efficiency of their fishing operations. The intricate patterns of the nets and the focused expressions of the menders made for compelling photography subjects.

Afternoon at the Salt Fields

As the day progressed, we visited the salt fields. The process of salt harvesting in Quy Nhon is a painstaking one, involving long hours under the harsh sun. Yet, the sight of salt workers, with their conical hats and long shadows stretching across the fields, was visually stunning.

Capturing the reflections of the workers in the shallow salt ponds during the late afternoon light was particularly rewarding. The tranquil ambiance of the salt fields provided a stark contrast to the morning’s vibrant activities at the beach market and fishing village.

The Essence of Central Vietnam

Quy Nhon and its surroundings encapsulate the essence of Central Vietnam. The region’s traditional activities, from fishing to salt harvesting, provide a deep connection to its cultural heritage. For photographers, this area offers an abundance of subjects, each telling a unique story.

My visit to Quy Nhon during the photography workshop was not just an opportunity to capture beautiful images but also a chance to witness and document the rich cultural tapestry of Central Vietnam. Through my lens, I aimed to preserve and share the beauty and traditions of this remarkable region.
